Mathew Ingram, who writes the Internet media blog Ingram 2.0 for The Globe and Mail, recently posted a great article about the first-ever ROLF-Con (ROLF is the Internet/ mobile chat acronym for “rolling on the floor laughing), an event held on the MIT campus that brought together Internet celebrities and their fans.

I, for one, would have given my right hand to meet Christian Ladner, Toronto-ex pat living in L.A., Internet copywriter, and creator/ blogger for Stuff White People Like (#2 – Religions that their parents don’t belong to, #70 – Difficult Breakups, #96 – New Balance shoes).

Carolyn Y. Johnson of The Boston Globe explains the phenomenon of ROLF-Con and Internet celebrity-dom: “In a way, the Web has given birth to a kind of cottage industry of individuality – people who build a brand around a personality or a passion.”

Jericho Fans are Nuts – Update

As an update to my earlier Jericho blog post, CNN Entertainment is now reporting that Jericho fans have shipped a total of 25 tons of nuts to CBS executives in hopes of getting their favorite show back on the air. Rumors are that the show will indeed be coming back for a midseason run. Nina Tassler, the president of CBS Entertainment explains that most fans were watching the show via Tivo or personal DVR, which don’t register on the Nielsen ratings. According to Nielsen, viewership was down, but according to 25 tons of nuts Jericho still has a faithful following.

In keeping with the spirit of the show, “Jericho” fans have sent over 13 tons of peanuts to CBS executives after the brass cancelled their favourite show. Many of these fans, who write fan fiction, have seen the success of other grassroots campaigns to get cancelled shows back on the air. We’re now enjoying new episodes of Veronica Mars, Everwood and Arrested Development thanks to the dedicated fans of these shows. Let’s hope for Jericho fans that the CBS executives understand their nutty message.
